Have you ever seen someone on Instagram or another form of social media, and thought, “Wow! I wish I could look like that” or “This person’s life looks so much better than mine…”
When we see how other people live or look, we tend to compare ourselves to them and we look down on ourselves. And if we do not get enough ‘likes’ on social media, we feel as though people do not like us. It may sound superficial, but many young people think like this. We end up feeling depressed and isolated, because we think that we are not good enough. We look at celebrities’ bodies and wealthy people with envy; we admire the pictures we see online so much that we end up thinking our lives and worth are nothing.
But there is news for you.
- The majority of what we see online is not an accurate reflection of people’s lives. Many pictures depict the ‘happy’ moments; they do not reflect the full spectrum of one’s life. No one is going to post a picture of them feeling sad because no one wants to see that. We all have our good days and bad days.
- Comparing yourself to others will not bring you any benefit. On social media, we compare ourselves to so many people that by the time we have finished browsing, we feel down. You will never be satisfied with your life because you constantly compare it to others. It does not, and will never bring any benefit to you. So stop comparing yourself.
Instead of focusing on other people, focus on your own and you will get far. Because while you envy that girl or the couple who seem perfect, these people are living their lives and advancing without a care in the world.
Social media is not bad; it is a great platform for many people and gives us the chance to be able to connect with others. However, we should use social media with care.
So, in order to combat this, you are being challenged to a social media detox. Maybe you will do it for 24 hours, a week or even a month. It does not matter how long, but try it and see how you feel and how you spend your free time. And if you would like to tell us about your experience, we would love to hear from you, so comment below!
